Biographical Information about Children's Book Author, Angelica Carpenter
Angelica Carpenter is the co-author of three illustrated biographies for young people, all from Lerner Publications: FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT: BEYOND THE SECRET GARDEN, L. FRANK BAUM: ROYAL HISTORIAN OF OZ, and ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON: FINDING TREASURE ISLAND. Angelica is writing on her own now since the death of her mother and co-author Jean Shirley.
Angelica is the first Curator of the new Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature at California State University, Fresno. An active member of the International Wizard of Oz Club, she chairs the literary track of the Club's upcoming centennial conference, to be held July 20-23, 2000, at Indiana University. About Angelica Carpenter's Author Talks
Angelica speaks for groups of all ages, from fourth graders to senior citizens. References are available on request. She can supply her own books to sell at lectures.
Talks include:
FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT (slide show and travelogue). Historical photos and contemporary photos of Burnett's home in Kent, where she found and restored a neglected, walled garden.
LITERARY GARDENS (slide show and travelogue) features the garden at Oxford where Lewis Carroll met Alice Liddell, Frances Hodgson Burnett's walled garden in Kent (it inspired THE SECRET GARDEN), and the garden at Sissinghurst Castle designed by authors Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson.
LITTLE BITS OF THE PUZZLE (lecture). Angelica describes her writing techniques with examples from her biographies.
L. FRANK BAUM AND OZ (slide show) summarizes the first three Oz books and traces Baum's careers and travels from New York, to Indian Territory, to Hollywood in the days of silent movies.
HEATHER TO HIBISCUS: ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON FROM SCOTLAND TO THE SOUTH SEAS (slide show and travelogue). Historical photos and current views of Edinburgh, France, California, and Samoa.
LEWIS CARROLL AT OXFORD (slide show and travelogue). Historical photos and contemporary shots of the Lewis Carroll Centenary Conference at Oxford, the Isle of Wight, and Guildford, where Lewis Carroll died.
Suggested honorarium
Basic rate for a one-day school visit is $500.
