When I was in kindergarten my grammar school had a contest to draw George
Washington chopping down the cherry tree. I drew what I thought was a
good picture, but of course some 6th grader won. (Maybe his or her parents
helped draw it, I'll never know.) I can still remember standing transfixed
in front of the display cabinet at the entrance to the school, studying
the winning entry, amazed at how good it was. How did they get the figure
to look so real? My five year old's drawing was so flat and stiff by comparison.
All the other kids were running to the bus, playing and screaming like
normal kids, and there I stood for I don't know how long, analyzing this
drawing. I knew then that that's what I wanted to do someday ~ draw things
and people that looked "real". Then in third grade I won a coloring contest
sponsored by a local coffee shop, and my prize was a banana split, a bank
radio (which I still have) and $5. Hey! I can make money doing this!
