During Bobbie Kinkead's childhood while living in the
mountains of Colorado, she wrote, sketched, and told
stories. In sixth grade she had the extraordinary opportunity
of attending the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center. Activities
in tempera painting, chalk, clay building, watercolors,
and paper mache convinced Bobbie that art was her life.
She drew people, fairies, cats, rabbits, and dogs traveling
on adventures. She still has illustrations she did in
sixth grade, junior high and high school. She studied
Elementary Education and Art at the University of Colorado
in Boulder. In the summer of her senior year Bobbie
had the pleasure of attending a course on children's
literature and drew her first picture book dummy. She
had no idea how to publish her works until 1982 when
she saw an ad in the College of Oakland Arts and Crafts
newsletter. The Society of Children's Book Writers invited
illustrators to their Los Angeles conference. That conference
was Bobbie's opening into the world of writing and illustrating
books for children.
