I have loved books for as long as I can remember. I
was very young when I began “tipping in” my own drawings
to books in our home library. I drew on tiny pads of
paper, tore off the sheets, and tucked these 'illustrations'
along side appropriate writing passages. After studying
illustration and design at Pratt Institute I worked
“in-house” as designer and art director for several
NYC children's book publishers while simultaneously
launching my illustration career. My first picture book,
Juan Bobo and the Pig (Lodestar/Dutton,
1993) was an American Booksellers' Pick
of the List and an Original Art Show selection. Elizabeti's
Doll (Lee & Low, 1998) was an ALA notable, Ezra
Jack Keats Award and Charlotte Zolotow Award recipient.
In a starred review Publisher's Weekly
called the book “A little slice of perfection.” The
Elizabeti series has received many additional
honors. I continue to work as a freelance designer/art
director, and after illustrating numerous picture books,
I also look forward to the publication of my debut book
as author. The East-West House: Noguchi's Childhood
in Japan (Lee & Low, September 2009) tells
about the artistic beginnings of the biracial sculptor,
Isamu Noguchi.
