Online Gallery features: Susan B. Katz
Susan B. Katz taught overseas at the American School in Valencia, Spain. Upon returning, a box of hand painted dishes broke in transit. “If life gives you broken dishes, make mosaics!,” she thought. So, this pioneering artist began a business called Mosaic Maestras. She’s since taught mosaic classes and sold her ceramic mosaics for years, a talent that fortunately morphed into her innovative mosaic style children’s book illustrations. Using cut paper tesserae (tiles) and mixed media, Susan creates collages alive with bold colors and exquisite design. She firmly believes that mosaics represent life: We take all the pieces and transform them into a beautiful work of art! Susan is a National Board Certified Teacher with over 12 years experience as an elementary bilingual educator and consultant. Ms. Katz has presented at the annual SCBWI Asilomar Conference. She is a proud member of The Revisionaries critique group in San Francisco, along with Yuyi Morales, Lynn Hazen, Gianna Marino, Karen Ehrhardt, Jim Averbeck and Maria van Lieshout. Susan is represented by Deborah Warren of East/West Literary Agency. Susan B. Katz, a University of Michigan graduate, began accumulating accolades at age 14 when she won the Detroit Free Press Writing Award for a poem about her grandmother. Susan loves to travel and over the years lived in both Spain and Costa Rica. Much of the inspiration for her books comes from her rich experiences overseas. In Costa Rica, she worked in a rain forest that later inspired several bilingual stories and vivid animal illustrations.
