Karen Stanton
June 1, 2005 through June 30, 2005
- Born in Southern California and raised in the Chicago Area. Came back
to California 20 years ago to go to graduate school at Cal Berkeley
in Architecture, and never left.
- Have four kids aged 17, 14, 13 and 4.
- Worked for several years as an architect in the East Bay doing residential
design. But didn't find the joy in it that I found in architecture school
or in my internships where I designed a gingerbread high rise, a Barcalounger
chair, and images for Swid Powell china.
- In the mid 90s, I took my first class in children's book writing.
And began making art that still sells in galleries around the country.
- After several years of classes and lots of waffling between the then
male-dominant career of architecture and the female-dominant work of
writing for children, I made the commitment to books.
- As my 40th birthday loomed, I buckled down to the serious pursuit
of finding a publisher for my picture book. Three months later I sold
my first book Mr. K and Yudi which I wrote and illustrated.
- On my 40th birthday, I had lunch in Manhattan, with my publisher
and the art director for my book!
- The book came out in spring 2001 with Children's Golden Books (who
soon after were bought by Random House.)
- My second book Papi's Gift will be coming out next year with Boyds
Mills Press.
- I am currently working on two middle grade novels and a few picture
books. Last year I took over teaching a class on children's writing,
illustration and publishing at CCSF for my friend and fellow illustrator
Mira Reisberg. And I found that I love teaching.
