I started out as a botanical illustrator and have been
fortunate enough to expand my work to include even more
of my interests. For the past 11 years I have created
a series of exhibits called Faery Medicine, featuring
my illustrations and "faerytales" I have written. In
an effort to pass on valuable information in a magical
and entertaining way, Faery Medicine started out with
plant faeries and stories that focused on medicinal
plant usage. The project has since grown to include
many different fantastical characters that highlight
various world cultures and ideas. My hope is to spark
an interest in the vast cultural wisdom that exists
before it disappears completely.
Other than creating work for my exhibits, my favorite
type of illustration job requires me to depict parts
of our surroundings that aren't readily seen. I like
to think I capture the soul of our natural world - giving
different ideas and places a persona. In my imagination
all places have a face of some kind.
When I create a piece, I generally combine airbrush
with pen and ink and colored pencil, but my most recent
project involved printing my illustrations on raw silk.
The results are rich and alive and I look forward to
experimenting with that process more in the future.
Meanwhile, I will continue to gain inspiration from
studying cultural traditions and taking in my daily
dose of creative energy from Lake Tahoe, the magical
place where I live and play with my husband, daughter,
and cat.
