I work from my home and studio in Woodside, California, we affectionately call our "tree house", with my artist/writer husband Mark Holmes and our twin four-year-old sons. As long as I can remember I have always loved reading, drawing and painting. As a kid, my friends and I would write and illustrate spooky or fantastic stories then make our own little picture books. I was hooked! Illustrating books seemed like the coolest job on earth. I graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and have taken classes at UC Berkeley and Stanford University in children's book illustration and picture-book writing. I work as a freelance illustrator in the editorial and children's market place. I have also illustrated and art directed for various companies in the multi-media, corporate, educational and game industries. I work primarily in acrylics but occasionally use pastels. I like to use theatrical lighting and color to get the mood of the piece I am illustrating. My technique involves laying down an acrylic wash to dry, then working over it with a dry brush, scumbling the paint to give the work a soft pastel like quality.
