Opportunities for Illustrators
Illustrators may display portfolios which will be reviewed by the editors and art director. Portfolios should be 11” x 17” or smaller. Please bring no more than 15 illustrations in the portfolio. Do not include original art. Use printed samples, photographs of originals, printouts, or photocopies of your work. Dummies may be displayed. We are not responsible for lost or damaged items. Illustrators may set out business cards and postcards with the portfolio.

Illustrators may sign up for portfolio reviews by Ruth Peterson and Marijka Kostiw. Spaces are limited. When the review times are filled, there will be a waiting list. Reviews are $40. Do not include a check with registration.. A check or cash may be paid at the door on May 2, 2009

Opportunities for Writers

Writers may submit a picture book, middle grade, or YA manuscript for a written critique by editors and agents. Please submit the complete manuscript for a picture book. For middle grade and YA manuscripts, please send the first ten pages with an outline and a summary. Include a resume with your submission.

All manuscripts must be double-spaced. The page numbers are in the upper right –hand corner beginning with page two. List your name and a key title word on the upper left side of each page beginning with page two. On page one, list your full name and contact information on the upper left side.

Centered half-way down the first page is the title and the byline. The story begins here.

Editors will select and meet with the authors of the most promising manuscripts during the conference.

Written critiques are $50. The manuscripts, critique fee and complete registration must be received by March 20, 2009.

Past Event

SCBWI PAL Writers and Illustrators may display published work at the conference. SCBWI PAL members who have a book that was published in 2008 or 2009 may sign up to give a five minute book introduction during the conference. The request to give the introduction must be included with the registration.

Registration is from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM and the conference ends at 4:45 PM

The Veterans’ Memorial Center, 203 East 14th Street, Davis, California.

The Center is located between the library and the high school. 

If you are driving on 80 from the west, take the 113 Exit north, toward Woodland. (Don’t take 113 to Dixon.)

Exit Covell and go right.

Continue on Covell until you reach F Street. Turn right. Pass the park and turn right on 14th Street. Follow the directions for 14th Street.

If you are coming from Sacramento on 80, exit at Mace Blvd.

Turn right, go over the overpass and continue. The road will curve to the left after Alhambra. Pass Pole Line Road, and turn left when you reach F Street. Turn right on 14th Street. Follow the directions for 14th Street.

If you travel on I-5 from the north or south, take 113 to Davis. Exit Covell and turn left. Continue on Covell until you reach F Street. Turn right. Pass the park and turn right on 14th St. Follow the directions for 14th Street.

You will pass a school and the library on the right. The Veterans’ Memorial Center is after the library. Turn into the city/high school parking lot on the right, after you pass the center.

Conference Speakers
Joy Allen
Joy Allen has illustrated over 30 books for many different publishers. She is the illustrator for the series CAM JANSEN and the new chapter series ABIGAIL IRIS. Her recent book BABY SIGNS is an Oprah Reading List pick. Her forthcoming picture book PRINCESS PARTY is a lead book for Fall 2009 for Putnam. Joy has branched out her book illustration into licensing. She now has lines of cards, fabrics and in 2010 will have a line of Christmas ornaments. Many more projects in licensing are in the works as well.

Nathan Bransford
Nathan Bransford is an agent in the San Francisco office of Curtis Brown Ltd., a New York-based agency that has been representing authors since 1914. He represents a wide range of genres and is particularly interested in literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, young adult fiction, historical fiction, mystery, science fiction, business, sports, politics and popular culture.

Chris Eboch
Chris Eboch is the author of The Well of Sacrifice, a middle grade drama set in ninth-century Guatemala . Her series, Haunted will debut in August. She will be presenting a program on virtual school visits.

Kendra Levin
Kendra Levin is an associate editor at Viking Children’s Books, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), where she has spent the past three years working on a wide range of children’s literature from picture books to young adult novels. Prior to that, she worked at Scholastic in several different capacities. An award-winning playwright whose work has been produced Off and Off-Off Broadway, Kendra is also a certified life coach who helps writers connect more deeply with their work and themselves.

Diane Muldrow
Diane Muldrow is an editorial director at Golden Books/Random House as well as an author of books for kids of all ages

Linda Joy Singleton
PROMOTING ON THE WEB: Blogs, Boards and Book Trailers.
Google Linda Joy Singleton's name and you'll get over 20,000 hits. As her editor once said, she's all over the web. And it's not an accident--it's a promotion strategy. Linda blogs, chats, and has a book trailer for her new book, DEAD GIRL WALKING. She's published over 30 books, including the popular THE SEER and DEAD GIRL series.

Marijka Kostiw
Marijka Kostiw is a Scholastic Art Director for Arthur Levine, Orchard and Scholastic Press Books

Ruth Sanderson
Ruth Sanderson has illustrated 75 books for children of all ages and retold and illustrated many fairytales. Her works include THE TWELVE DANCING PRINCESSES, PAPA GATO, CINDERELLA, THE GOLDEN MARE, and THE SNOW PRINCESS.  THE GOLDEN MARE and THE FIREBIRD AND THE MAGIC RING won the Texas Bluebonnet Award for 2003. THE ENCHANTED WOOD, an original fairytale, received the Irma S. Black award for best picture book of 1992 and the Young Hoosier Award in 1995. Her latest book is MOTHER GOORSE AND FRIENDS.  She has illustrated book covers, advertising art, collector’s plates, greeting cards, and licensed work. She creates paintings for exhibition and sale.

Sara Kahn
Sara Kahn began illustrating children’s books after receiving her BA in Fine Art. She has received a number of awards and scholarships for her work. She taught art classes to all ages from kindergarten to the university level. Sara earned her MA degree in Educational Psychology and a post-master’s certificate in art therapy from U. C. Berkeley. She won the SCBWI Magazine Merit award for illustrations in Cricket Magazine.

 

SCBWI PAL MEMBERS with books published in 2008 and 2009 will introduce their books. Their books will be sold by the conference bookstore.
