"Wabi Sabi: the book
and the story behind the illustrations"
By Author Mark Reibstein

Mark Reibstein Our East Bay Series returns with author Mark Reibstein, an English teacher and writer who has lived in New York, California, Hawaii, Japan, and Thailand. He is the author of Wabi Sabi, a book about a little cat in Kyoto, Japan. Wabi Sabi had never thought much about her name until friends visiting from another land asked her owner what it meant.
Mark will talk about what wabi sabi is, how the text evolved with the illustrations, and the dramatic story of how Wabi Sabi came to be published. After the first set of illustrations were lost, artist Ed Young reconceived the work in a second draft that more fully realized the idea of wabi sabi, or the beauty of simple things.
